Man found guilty, mentally ill in assault

The Times Express - 7/14/2017

A Monroeville man was found guilty but mentally ill for kidnapping and assaulting a woman last year.

After several days of deliberation, the Allegheny County jury convicted Calvin McDonald, 31, of Lakewood Drive, of aggravated assault,

kidnapping and related charges.

The jury acquitted McDonald of attempted murder, sexual assault and endangering the welfare of children.

On June 17, 2016, McDonald got into an argument with a woman at his residence. He then used rope and duct tape to tie up the woman, choked her and threw her into the back of a minivan.

The Tribune-Review does not identify victims of sexual assault.

He drove off with the woman and two children and drove around for several hours, going as far as Wheeling, W.Va. He later returned to the residence, where the victim was able to communicate to a neighbor through an upstairs window to call police.

During the trial, a forensic psychologist testified McDonald was diagnosed in 2013 with post-traumatic stress disorder stemming from an abusive childhood that included food deprivation, restraint and beatings.

Following the verdict, McDonald was remanded to the county jail. Sentencing is expected to take place in late September.
