The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) offers grants to help low income families pay their heating bills. The program operates as both a direct funding source for utility companies, who then distribute the money on behalf of themselves; or through crisis aid when applicants face immediate danger without heat in cold winter months like December and January because temperatures can drop below freezing at night locally - making it difficult if not impossible for them survive comfortably indoors during that time period with only one small space heated by an electric firetop stovetops!).
