American Legion highlights veterans' issues

Star - 8/16/2018

Aug. 16--Veterans and supporters made their way through the streets of uptown Shelby Wednesday morning for the third annual Veterans Awareness Walk.

Organized by Shelby Post 82, the walk aims to raise awareness around issues veterans face, like post-traumatic stress disorder and struggling to receive benefits and healthcare.

American Legion National Commander Denise Rohan helped lead the walkers down Warren and Washington streets, from the court square to the Don Gibson Theatre and back.

Rohan said she looked forward to spending time in Shelby and getting to know more members of the American Legion family and others who are touched by the work they do.

"It is great to know we are changing lives in our communities and across this nation," she said. "We're making a difference for our veterans, their families and all of the youth we'll be meeting with this weekend."

On the court square, prior to the walk, Shelby Mayor Stan Anthony thanked the veterans for their service in the military and as legionnaires.

"Thank you for what you do as the American Legion for all our veterans. You're such an important part of our country," Anthony said. "And thank you to Post 82 here in Shelby for all you do to make our community a blessed, great place."
