The DynaVox Xpress is a handheld direct selection or scanning communicator designed for use by individuals with significant speech, language and learning disabilities stemming from stroke/aphasia, autism, Down syndrome, traumatic brain injury, motor neuron disease (MND) or apraxia of speech. This portable device provides a full range of communication capabilities to support communication in person, on the phone, text message, e-mail, etc. This unit features the same type of touch screen as the iPhone and Blackberry Storm and enables augmented communicators to drag or sweep their fingers or thumbs over the screen to quickly access content and make selections. Access methods include simple touch (make selections by dragging or sweeping across the screen), touch enter, touch exit, and scanning. Built-in Wi-Fi enables users to surf the Internet, copy content (images, text, audio, and video) directly from a web page to a communication page, speak text immediately from a web page, send e-mail, and input text using the auto-popup keyboard. This device contains an integrated infrared remote control that can be programmed to work with thousands of hew household appliances in seconds. Built-in Bluetooth supports Bluetooth keyboards and/or computer mice and allows the device to be used as a type-and-talk device. The integrated calendar enables users to keep track of tasks, events, and appointments. Symbols and sounds can be assigned to calendar items. The device also features integrated MP3 and video players and a customizable Dashboard. Available from any communication page, the onscreen Dashboard allows users to navigate through content, access system features, enter the menu structure, access a computer from a distance using Access IT, and provides access to the calendar and alarm clock. The Dashboard allows users to modify the layout, add or delete buttons, and make the buttons larger or smaller. This device also features the InterAACT language framework that supports literacy and language development, as well as the Tango’s (see separate entry) phrase-first language structure. An expanded library Picture Communication Symbols (PCS) is included to ensure that individuals of all ages can access symbols that are meaningful to them. Every device ships with DynaVox Xpress software and InterAACT content, Picture Communication Symbols (PCS), AT&T Natural Voices, Acapela HQ Voices, Loquendo Voices, Microsoft English Voices, CDs/DVDs with Xpress Design Software, back-up user files and voices, a two-gigabyte USB Flash Drive, Xpress on the Go booklet, power adapter with power cord, and carrying handle. POWER: Uses a rechargeable lithium-ion battery or the included power adapter. An optional 12-volt car adapter for charging and an extended-life battery are available. OPTIONS: Transportation case, external USB keyboard, external Bluetooth keyboard, USB wired mouse, and AccessIT, USB switch interface adapter. DIMENSIONS (W x H x D): 6 x 4 x 1.75 inches. WEIGHT: 1 pound, 7 ounces with standard battery or 2 pounds, 1 ounce with extended battery. WARRANTY: One-year all-inclusive warranty, with up to four additional years available.
