---- CUSTOMIZED ADAPTATION --------- PURPOSE: To create a custom adapted electronic book reader for an individual with cerebral palsy. Glenn, an electrical engineer created the "Frankenkindle" for his sister using an Amazon Kindle and a keypad from a children's reader. This e-reader adaptation features controls that are easier for and individuals with cerebral palsy or other types of fine motor and neurological disabilities to use compared to the standard buttons on the Kindle. The device is mounted on a plywood board and includes a circular interface board with a flat cable connecting the keypad from a children's reader to the Kindle device to a Teensy USB microcontroller located behind the plywood mount. The controller is used to create macros that interpret and pass along the proper input commands to the Kindle. Power is supplied by a 5 volt "wall wart" style power supply and a 9-pin serial cable is used to provide an easy quick-disconnect for the front panel buttons. AUTHOR: Billy Steele.
