The Alphabet Discovery Bottle is an letter recognition sensory bottle designed for children with intellectual difficulties to help them through olfactory sense and proprioception with learning the alphabet, to allow them a calming way to learn the letters of the alphabet. Depending on the size/weight of the bottle this can be a motor activity, movements carried out when the brain, nervous system, and muscles work together.

Options for Play:

  • Look and search for letters. Find one, name it with the child. Shake up the bottle. Repeat.
  • Shake and roll the bottle and ask the child what letter they see. Find letters in alphabetical order.
  • Ask the child to find a letter that "apple, ant, etc." start with.  Name words for each letter and ask the child to find those letters in the sensory bottle. When the child finds the letter, have them name words that start with that letter's sound.
  • Use the empty foam puzzle.  Point to a letter spot and ask the child to name that letter and then find it in the discovery bottle.
  • Ask the child to shake the discovery bottle and find a letter.  Ask them to point to that letter's spot in the empty puzzle.
  • Ask the child to find a letter in the discovery bottle.  When they do, ask them to use the discovery bottle like a pointer and draw that letter in the air, using both hands on the bottle.  Provide hand-over-hand assistance, if needed.
  • Look around the room and play "I Spy".  Say to your child, "I Spy  something that starts with the letter A, I Spy something that starts with the letter B, etc."  Have them guess the item in the room, then shake the sensory bottle and find the letter "A, B, etc." in the discovery bottle.

Instructions:

  • Step One - Dump out half of the salts into a large bowl.  Add in the alphabet foam letters.  Ask the child to help name the letters as they're dropped in one by one.
  • Step Two - Start scooping in the remaining bath salts.  This is a great sensory activity for children.  The olfactory sense is one linked to recall.  Invite children to sniff the air as the salts are scooped into the container.
  • Step Three - Glue the lid before playing to prevent ingestion of bath salts.
  • Step Four - Start playing! Allow the child to shake, roll, shake some more with the discovery bottle. Invite the child to shake until they find and can identify the letters in the bottle. Shaking the bottle has weight and provides proprioceptive input to children.

Use this activity as a warm up to fine motor tasks such as handwriting or drawing. Bath salts are dangerous for children to eat, so stay with the child at all times during this activity. Provide supervision according to the child's needs.
